A Passion Play-where does it stand today?

I'm interested to know what other Tull fanatics think of APP. To me it stills stands as one of their best studio albums. It was always going to be difficult to follow TAAB, and although Play achieved No1 in the US charts on the back of TAAB it was roundly hammered by the critics of the day. Highlights for me on the album are Ians's classical-style acoustic guitar playing (as always) and the 'Zappa-esq' instrumental in the early part of side 2.
I played the album to my wife yumumy and when she heard the bit "All the old familiar choruses come crowding in a different key" she described it as pretentious, wanky and a pale imitation of Queen!

Pretty sleepy here. I'm getting back into Jethro Tull after a few years. I was a BIG fan in the late 60's and early 70's. One of the great concerts I went to was in Seattle when Yes opened for Tull. After Yes (I had never heard them before that concert), I thought, "How can Anderson and company top that?" It was the Aqualung tour, and Tull kicked butt!

A New Day Yesterday has always been one of my all time favorites.

Songs From the Wood moves me in a deep and Pagan way.

My favorite live moment was a mind searing rendention of My God. The shaw was in Denver nearly a decade ago and I think my ears are still ringing!

Having a wondertull time.

Greetings/Ian's voice

A big hello to Tull fans everywhere.
My name is Godfrey.
I was introduced to Tull during a childhood which was awash with the sounds of my parents' record collection. I remember the big night in 1973 of the Tull concert. It was magnificent, so I was told; sadly, I was left home with the baby sitter. However through frequent playings of Thick as a brick, Aqualung and Benefit, my young musical mind absorbed the Tull sound by osmosis. I distinctly remember being somewhat perplexed by the lyric 'Your sperm's in the gutter, your love's in the sink...'
To be honest, the line still unnerves me. Nevermind!
I should like to introduce a topic for discussion if I may. I have charted the sound of Ian's voice over the many years of the band's studio recording. In my opinion the vocal range best suited to Ian's singing was evident on Benefit. This was generally a few tones lower than in Aqualung. In the latter album Ian seemed to be straining at higher registers, aiming for a sound not unlike Kurt Cobain's grunge style appearing some 20 years later. The sound was not helped I suppose by the relatively poor production standard on that album. This is a pity given that the album is an excellent collection of songs.
So my question is this: did the strain evident on Aqualung tell on Ian's voice later?

Hello All,

My vote is for Martin. He is one of the most inventive players I have ever heard. A quiet, self-effacing man, whose presence, on both album and on stage, is simply awesome.

If anyone is interested, please do check a small appreciation on Martin on my blog, aquaminerale.blogspot.com

I shall try and add this blog to mine, so that fans can come here. That is, if it is okay with you guys.

Cheers,

Jethro Tull at Red Rocks!!!

I do not know if everybody is aware of the historic ill-fated concert at Red Rocks in Colorado in 1971. There was a riot, largely escalated by local police. After the show the Maryor of Denver stated that a rock concert would never be held at Red Rocks again. This ban lasted five years, but Tull was never to play there again.
Just recently announced, for the 40th aniversary of Jethr Tull, they will playing at Red Rocks in August!! I just got my tickets and I am so excited that they will be playing at historic Red Rocks.
If you don't know about this venue, give it a google and check it out. If you can travel to see Tull in August, don't miss this opportunity to have a wonder-Tull time.

See you there!

I picked up the remastered Broadsword, mostly for all the bonus tracks, and I have to say it sounds pretty damn good. Much as I hate the idea they may just have found a way to get my money twice.

Has anyone tried the remasters of the early albums, like Stand Up and Benefit? Is the sound quality notably better? I could see the recordings themselves being the limiting factor for those.

... Now, that was a show... the band was touring to promote the new album release... before the show, the roadies were bustling around the stage getting everything ready to go... checking this, checking that... adjusting mics, check 1, 2, 3, ... etc... they were all dressed in trench coats and hats...well dressed crew... the house lights were up in the coliseum (in Seattle)... then, without warning, a number of the people took their coats and hats off, picked up their instruments, and there was Tull... the house lights came down and the show began... the first song was the entire album, beginning to end... ahhh, a great concert by a great band... I remember it as if it was last night....

A side note; many of the bands since in Seattle have paid homage to the rhythm section of Tull... One of the best in Rock & Roll.

Tull Metaphors

Thanks for this Tribe, Gypsy. I'm not sure I can say I'm "hardcore" but I would say I'm "die hard". Will that do?

So a Tull metaphor that came to mind one day is that the'yre a bit like psychedelic renaissance folk rock.

Just a thought

A buddy of mine's mother saw Tull and Ian Anderson played a whole set on one foot. Hmmm. . .
